Set high in the North Pennines, Epiacum Roman Fort — or Whitley Castle — is one of the most striking and best-preserved Roman sites in Britain. Its dramatic ramparts and commanding position make it a landmark of national significance. Yet today, the monument faces growing pressures from water management, visitor erosion, livestock, and slope instability around nearby farmland.

Crosby Granger Architects have been appointed to lead a major feasibility study that will shape the future care of the site. Working with Epiacum Heritage CIO and the Edgar family, we are coordinating a team of archaeologists, engineers, ecologists and heritage specialists to understand the fort’s vulnerabilities and propose sustainable solutions.
