Whether that be in new-build design, or conservation and repair of historic buildings, an understanding of the materials and building pathology of an existing building is essential.
When working with historic buildings, a palette of natural building materials were used, among the most common are; stone, clay (fired or unfired), timber, straw/heather/reed, heavy metals (e.g lead), and lime mortars for building, plastering and rendering. The way these materials work together creating an equilibrium across the section of a structure is crucial for the wellbeing of the structure and the health of the internal environment. By interfering with just one of these ‘breathable’ layers by making it impermeable will affect both structure and internal environment, potentially causing sick building syndrome in the worse cases, or as a minimum, damp and mould growth leading to respiratory diseases, asthma, allergies and lung infections.
All of our work with existing buildings, whether repair or extension and alteration begins with a fabric assessment looking at the building pathology. We will asses whether the materials are working together or against each other, and will specify works to bring the structure back into equilibrium, creating a healthier internal environment for all users.
In our new buildings, we advise our clients of the best routes in ‘eco-build’, again using natural materials to create a healthier internal environment and healthier structure that deals appropriately with weather fluctuations and predispositions depending on exposure and location.
Our technical expertise in building conservation also leads us to working in collaboration with other architects who ask us to consult on particularly difficult or sensitive projects. We advise on buildings that require specialist assessment, condition surveys or detailed specification, as well as guiding on philosophical approach.
