Read moreCrosby Granger Architects have been appointed to assist the Holker Estate with a range of projects including the critical restoration work within Holker Hall – the home of the Cavendish family for the last 400 years.
Water has damaged part of the house that is open to the public affecting silk wall-linings, wall papers, decorative ceilings and timber panelling in the drawings room and the Duke’s bedroom of the Grade II* listed building.
Crosby Granger Architects are managing the complex repairs while working with Holker Hall’s inhouse estate team of land agents and building surveyors who include a newly appointed scholar from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Lilian Touhy Main. Repairs are being made to rectify the source of the damage and once this is finished, specialist repair and restoration experts, Hirst Conservation, and other skilled craftsmen and women such as weavers, decorators and wall paper makers will commence the next phase of work.
Elsewhere on the estate Crosby Granger Architects are looking at options to improve the office provisions above the Courtyard Café adjacent to the Visitor Services. In doing so, applications were made for change of use and Listed Building consent to knock a door through into one of the residential flats to open up the whole first floor U-shape of the Visitor Services building so it became fully accessible internally. These improved office provisions would then free up buildings within the estate which can be developed as follow on projects avoiding the risk of commercial properties being sat and not generating revenue.
