The Education shelter and toilet facility is situated in the wooded car park at Tarn Hows, Coniston – one of the ‘honey pots’ of The Lake District National Park. This site is surrounded by Sites of Special Scientific Importance and must balance this with being one of the busiest out of town destinations in the Lake District.
The extremely sensitive site and potential high impact of any building here gave Crosby Granger a challenge to provide a response that is robust whilst not adversely affecting the unique landscape surrounding it.
We have designed and constructed the building using larch cladding, beech flooring and oak seating that are all sourced from windfall on the adjacent National Trust Monk Coniston Estate and are topped with a green roof that uses two specific species of sedum that can be found locally.
The project needed detailed discussion with the Lake District National Park Authority and Crosby Granger Architects experience with the Planning Department to help our client create a distinctive building that sits discreetly in the landscape and reflects the National Trust’s desire to champion the use of sustainable local materials.
